was back working again within a matter of weeks. and it became evident to me in early 2010 from about a year after obama took office. three things happen. the first was from the united states supreme court. i think no person in the united states i can think of has benefited more from the supreme court of karl rove. two decisions. one in 2000 obviously with bush v. gore put his candidate in the white house and two, in 2010, citizens united decision. that opened the floodgates for contribution -- unlimited contributions. in many cases from secret sources is no transparency with the weather, that is just unprecedented in history. the second thing that happened with michael still running the applicant party instead of running it in to ditch and he couldn't raise the time and it came to his favor early in 2010. you may recall there was a revelation in los angeles that the republican national committee has been entertaining at at a lesbian bondage themed strip club. this did not work well, so they could not raise a dime. this gave for his opening. so he had a luncheon at his house in the we

of the polling we're seeing. national polls, it seems as if the dip that romney experienced last week is gone. that's the good news for you guys. the bad news is, president obama's number hasn't moved. so the bounce that he got into the 49, 50% range has held where it's governor romney's number that is fluid. are you one of those that believe that 49, 50% is the winning range? so that your next job, you're in the race, then the next job is you have to figure out how to peel votes away. >> you look at this in the context of where we are. there's five-plus weeks. there's a lot that can happen in five weeks. there's three presidential debates. and there's probably two or three hundred million ads to be dumped on the public. things change in presidential campaigns quite actively in september and early october. it's now that you start looking at serious numbers. the carter/reagan race didn't change until the last few weeks. there's a close parallel between this and carter/reagan. >> let me ask you about new hampshire's poll. i'm sure you didn't miss it. 15-point deficit for mitt romney. i'm guessi

and that is in the next four and a half weeks, and i'm sure in massachusetts is a good example for the republicans perspective where president obama is clearly going to run very well there. canned scott brown withstand the blue tide fair and right now, the democrats are doing well. you have a tea party backed candidate in indiana, richard mourdock and richard luke are in the primary. that is a very tight race but you have solid republican candidates. i was in missouri may be a month ago but in arizona where democrats are competitive and i think it just shows that one these races are still fluid. you can be and decided and we can say the race for president started with undecided voters yesterday. for some of these voters the senate race, it's going to be a couple of weeks before they really engage. the other thing that is going on here is, i don't know if people vote in races like a chess game but i do think you know, people pick and choose one from a i'll m and one from i obey. clearly one thing we haven't talked about is the fundamental dissatisfaction americans have with government and as they g

for the obama white house waging what has been an uphill battle against unemployment. this week the labor department reported the jobless rate fell sharply in september to 7.8%. that's the same level it was when president obama took office back in january 2009. actual growth last month was modest, only 114,000 jobs created. but the labor department also revised the july and august numbers to include an additional 86,000 new jobs. let's talk about it with the former white house chief economist austin goulsby. austin, thanks very much for coming in. what does this jobs report mean to you? >> well, i think it's a good sign. you know when i was in the white house i used to say every month good or bad, you never want to make too much out of any one month's numbers because it's plus or minus 100,000 jobs is the margin of error. so there's a lot of variability. >> what does that mean? >> this is a solid report. >> when you say plus or minus margin of error of 100,000 jobs, in other words if 114,000 jobs were created last month, it really could have 214,000 or it could have been 14,000? >> or 14,

to 14. let's speak electorally here. >> sure. >> you're pegging obama with 320.1 electoral votes, up nearly 11 in the last couple weeks or last week, romney at 217.9. 320 is a lot of electoral votes. that would be i think a mandate. >> so -- well i don't know if i would call ate mandate necessarily. if you have a small advantage in the popular vote and then if the swing states behave accordingly, obama's polling is stronger in the swing states it would look impressive on the map, it would be a below average margin for the incumbent. romney does have his work cut out for him. of the six we talked about before, the two biggest problems are probably ohio where he hasn't led in the poll by a long time and, in fact, his best polls put him down three or four points. the worst put him down nine or ten points. ohio is a huge problem for romney right now and wisconsin where he seemed to get a bounce often due when he named paul ryan has faded and see how single digits, a couple double-digit leads for obama in that state as well. without those two romney would have to sweep almost everything e

your fear of the word "terrorism." obama, the white house, his whole foreign policy team, they're dealing with a completely bizarre scandal related to the attacks in benghazi, driven by the fact that they spent a week after they knew this was probably a terrorist attack insisting that it was all about an anti-muslim voe and had very little to do with terror. i'm not sure what their theory is. it's part of a broader pattern where the obama white house wants to continue george w. bush's anti-terror policies, even expand them in terms of drone strikes and so on without completely acknowledging what they're doing. but in this case, it's made them look ridiculous. it seems unnecessary. >> i've lived in the middle east and in libya. and nothing that you see is as it seems. you don't have any idea who these people r. they showed up with grenade launch easy and sophisticated weapons. but in libya today, everybody's got some. >> that's fine. you don't even have to say, this is definitely terrorism. you just don't spend a week saying, well, it's all about this video that was made in sout

into the obama category. but we have polled in all of them over the last couple of weeks. the president has leads ranging anywhere from two to eight points. but what was interesting, we asked a few other questions. including job approval rating, romney favorability, and who wins on the economy. in three states, the president had a job approval rating of 49 or above. romney's unfavorable rating was higher than his favorable rating, and the president led romney on the economy. in three of those stays, iowa, ohio, new hampshire. just one state did you have the president's job approval rating 48% or over and romney winning on the issue of the economy. that's north carolina. if you look at it that way and go to the map to 270, what does that mean, and you put those four states into the respective categories, and look at. this the president for suur sho. romney a long way to go has to sweep the rest. there are five left in the background. florida, virginia, wisconsin, colorado, nevada. this is where if romney does do what chris christie said he will do, the first place you'll see it are in the five sta

the unemployment department on jobs. applications rose to 360,000. that is up from last week. a second report shows planned layoff 4.9% in september. yesterday the commerce department said factory orders dropped 5.2% in august. still, just a short time ago, president obama said today's report shows that the economy is headed in the right direction. >> after losing about 800,000 jobs a month when i took office, we have more jobs and we found out this link at the unemployment rate has fallen to its lowest level since i took office. obama among likely voters leads by three points, 49 to 46. that's down from a five-point edge that he had in our poll just about three weeks ago. if you also look at the nbc "wall street journal" maris swing state polls, he's pulled even with president obama in the state of florida. that's the biggest swing state, 29 electoral votes. if you go then to virginia, he's also pulled within two points in virginia. he had been down four or five before. the bad news for romney in these three polls is that in ohio, a state that is critical, romney strategists think they have to win florida and ohio to get to 270 electoral votes. he's still down eight percentage points, and what we've seen across these polls is that obama is increasingly competitive with romney on who would do best to handle the economy. but the fact that we've got a little bit of movement nationally and movement in florida and virginia tells me that there's still some play in this electorate, in this contest, and that's the hope for romney going into this debate tonight. >> what do you think happened in florida versus in ohio?

with a little bit, as his position has been changing just in the past couple of weeks. on medicare, the republicans had been ahead or even even with the democrats not long ago. but today president obama leads on medicare by 12 points. leads on medicare by even more than he's ahead on health care in general. it's also interesting that the president's middle east numbers, specifically, is ten points higher than his advantage over mr. romney on the broad issue of foreign policy. and then we get into some real contested ground. the president is favored on the issue of taxes, but on the generic question of who would be better trusted to handle the economy, mr. romney leads by three. on the deficit, mr. romney leads by nine. on all of these issues, that's the one on which he has the strongest trust from voters as compared with president obama. and that confidence in mr. romney on the deficit turns up not just in the nbc/"wall street journal" poll, but in a lot of national polls. even though he hasn't given a lot of details as to how he would handle the deficit as an issue. the bottom lin
